How often do you look for someone you can show kindness to? If I am being honest, I do not wake up most days thinking, “Who can I be kind to today?” But King David did, and he gives us a good example to follow and yet another reason why he was called a man after God’s heart. After reading these examples I want to start asking myself this question more often.

The king asked, “Is there no one still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king. “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.”

2 Samuel 9:3

Because David and Jonathan were such wonderful friends, David wanted to pay him back, in a way, for his kindness in the past by being kind to anyone left in his family. The only one left was a son of Jonathan, Mephibosheth. David invited him to dine at his table every night and restored all the land that had belonged to his family.

What a blessing that must have been for Mephibosheth and his family! He did not do anything to deserve the kindness of the King, he was just born into the right family. That reminds me of us as children of God. There is nothing we did to deserve the kindness of God, our king, we were just born into his family. God does not need a reason to be kind to us, he chooses to show us kindness because he loves us.

Let us be people who don’t need a reason to be kind, it’s just our default action because God loves us and we love him.
