A study on what I want my life to be filled with

Month: August 2020

The Goodness of God

I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.

Psalm 27:13

As I talked about in my last blog, God is a good God and that will never change. God desires to be good to his children. We do not have to wait until we get to heaven to experience his goodness. This verse says, “…in the land of the living,” here and now! Be confident in God, that he is good and that he wants to be good to us. Why do we lose that confidence in him so often? Confidence is based on trust and trust takes time and effort to build, right? But if we aren’t putting any time or effort into our relationship with God how are we ever going to trust him or trust that he wants to be good to us? I know we want instant gratification, but this takes time. Any relationship takes time and effort, so start putting some into your relationship with God and stop relying on him to do all the work. One-sided relationships are very difficult to maintain. But regardless of our effort God still loves us and still wants to be good to us.

How has God shown you his goodness?

Take some time to sit and reflect on your life and see where God’s hand has been along your journey.

I would love to hear where you have seen his goodness in your life!

Good Gifts From the Lord

God is good! He always has been, and he always will be. He never changes, so you can count on it. In fact, he is the only thing in your life that will never change.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

James 1:17

I love the imagery in this verse. Shadows are constantly changing, all day. As long as the sun is up, they are moving, shifting, and changing. But God does not change like that, he always remains the same. Therefore, all the gifts from him will be good and perfect forever. He will not suddenly decide to give you a bad gift or something mediocre. That is not in his nature, never has been, never will be. He has our best interest in mind.

It does take some time and effort to see this though. You must stop focusing on yourself and start looking around you. When you see that God is bigger and better than your circumstances you will start to see all the amazing gifts that are right in front of you. Seeing the good is hard when all we focus on is the negative, and believe me, I am talking to myself here. We are constantly bombarded with negative messages about ourselves, the world, our culture, our community, etc. We need to start bombarding ourselves with positive messages from the word of God, worship music, friends, family, podcasts, church services, small groups, etc. Wherever you can find encouragement, go find it! Slowly you will see that all these things are good and perfect gifts from your heavenly father who loves you and wants to give you good things.

Overcome Evil with Good

On the surface there is so much evil in this world it can be hard to see anything beyond it. But that is exactly what the enemy wants us to see. He wants us to think that there is more evil than good in the world and there is no way for good to win. Let me just remind you, GOOD WINS! The enemy is a liar and he is small. God is the truth and he is huge. His goodness will always win. Also, let me remind you, that goodness lives on the inside of you! The Holy Spirit is in you and all the goodness of God is in you waiting to get out and be good to others. On our own we are not good enough, but with God we can be.

When the enemy deceived Adam and Eve into eating from the tree of Good and Evil, God had a plan to redeem his children through the death of Jesus. Good won! When Pharaoh wanted to kill all the Israelite baby boys, God had a plan to save Moses and raise him in the very house that was set on his death. Good won! When David was tempted by lust and had an affair with Bathsheba, God had a plan to redeem their second child, Solomon, as the wisest man to ever live. Good won! And when good wins, God wins!! God always has a plan, we may not see or understand it at the time, but He always has a plan of redemption waiting for us.

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Romans 12:21

Amen! Evil has no power over us as children of God. We do not have to be overcome with evil. We can overcome evil with good. Whatever evil may come against you, take heart! Jesus overcame the world and all the evil in it and so can we.

Do Good to All People

We are in the home stretch of 2020, and I don’t think ANYONE could have predicted what this year was going to hold for any of us. As I have be focusing on a different fruit of the spirit almost every month, they have all been very well timed. This month I am going to focus on goodness. Not only the goodness of God but also on how we can be good to others. I think many people take for granted what being good to others can do for them. There are plenty of good people out there, but when you have the goodness of God behind your actions it is even more powerful. I want people to know I am a Christian not only by my love, but also by my goodness to humanity.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

Galatians 6:9-10

This has been a year of weariness for so many. With most of us working from home, missing our friends, family, and co-workers, we can get weary with life. But here the bible tells us not to become weary in doing good, because the harvest will come if we do not give up. I’m guessing that harvest is not only in how we bless others but also in how our own soul is blessed. I think it is also interesting that Paul reminds us to do good to those in our family of believers. Sometimes we focus so much on how to do good to those strangers in line, or that family in our neighborhood that needs a helping hand, that we forget to do good to our family of believers. We as Christians need to be encouraged just as much as those strangers.

So, check up on your friends and family! See how you can be doing good to those you love! Wait for the harvest to come and see the beautiful fruit that has been planted with the goodness that flows from God through you.
