Happy November! This month I am looking at gentleness in the bible, something that I think we all need to be more aware of, especially in the times we are living in. The bible praises those who are gentle, those who steer clear of hard words and violence but instead move toward kindness and love. That leads me to Proverbs. The wisdom of Proverbs is timeless. It always amazes me that something written so long ago can be so applicable today.

A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.

Proverbs 15:1, NIV

Isn’t that the truth! I’ll give an example from my own life. When I first met my husband and we would fight, I would go from 0-60 in about 10 seconds. I wasn’t necessarily saying mean things, but the harshness of my tone was definitely stirring up anger, not only in him, but also in me. I quickly learned that he would not respond to that type of fighting and had to learn a different way. It turns out that speaking with a gentler tone and not getting so worked up was the answer. Now I am by no means perfect at this, but I have come a long way. I can attest to the truth of this verse in my life. It is much better to speak gently to someone than to let harsh words fly.

In our world there are harsh words everywhere. In the news, on social media, and even from family and friends we love. Now take a moment to think about how our world and lives would change if those harsh words were gentle and spoken out of love instead of anger. Maybe next time you think about posting something harsh or controversial on social media, stop, remember this verse, and maybe post something a bit gentler.
